The good news is that almost every summer tire problem gives you warning signs first — if you know what to look for. Why summer is so rough on tires

A tire is basically air held inside rubber, and both of those things care a lot about temperature.

When it gets hot, the air inside your tires expands. That alone can push your pressure several pounds higher than where it sat back in March. Add in scorching pavement (and Mississippi asphalt in August gets hot) plus the extra weight of a car packed for a beach trip, and you've got a tire working a lot harder than it does the rest of the year.

Here's the part people miss: heat doesn't just raise the risk of a blowout on its own. It magnifies whatever's already wrong. A tire that's a little low, a little worn, or a little old will limp along just fine in mild weather. Throw a heat wave at that same tire and small problems turn into roadside problems in a hurry.

The warning signs worth watching for

You don't need to be a mechanic to catch most of this. Keep an eye out for:

• Tires that look low even after you've aired them up recently. Summer heat can mask a slow leak, because the expanding air hides the loss until things cool down.

• Uneven tread wear — one edge balding faster than the other. That's often an alignment issue, and it gets dangerous fast on hot roads.

• Cracks in the sidewall or a dry, weathered look to the rubber. Heat and sun age tires from the outside in.

• A vibration or shimmy that wasn't there before, especially as you get up to highway speed.

• That faint "thump-thump" sound as you roll. Tires shouldn't have a heartbeat. If yours does, get it looked at.

None of these mean you're stranded tomorrow. All of them mean it's worth a five-minute check before they decide the timing for you.

What you can actually do about it

A little attention goes a long way. Here's the short list:

Check your pressure in the morning. Tires read most accurately when they're cool, before the sun and the driving heat them up. The right number for your vehicle is on a sticker inside the driver's door — not the number molded into the tire itself, which is the maximum, not the target.

Don't forget the spare. It's been sitting in your trunk soaking up heat too, and a flat spare is just dead weight when you actually need it.

Do the penny test. Stick a penny into your tread, Lincoln's head pointing down. If you can see all of his head, your tread's getting thin and it's time to start shopping. Worn tread plus hot, sometimes-wet summer roads is a combination you don't want.

Get your alignment checked if anything feels off. Mississippi roads have a way of finding every pothole, and a knocked-out wheel alignment chews through tires faster in the heat.

Air conditioning counts too. While you're thinking about summer, a vehicle that can't keep you cool is its own kind of miserable. If your A/C is blowing warm, that's a summer fix worth making.
